The attractive resort town of Te Anau lies nestled on the edge of the lake with a spectacular backdrop of Mt. Luxmore and the Murchison mountains. The picturesque town offers a range of cafés, restaurants and bars from fish and chips to fine dining. I very much enjoyed my stay here.
YHA Te Anau
This is an excellent homely hostel in which we were able to relax and unwind after our day of exploring Milford Sounds and the glowworm caves.
We took advantage of their modern, clean and very large kitchen. However there is the option of enjoying a BBQ in the private native garden or why not treat yourself to some of the wonderful local cuisine only 100 meters away.
On the edge of the Fiordland National Park, YHA Te Anau is the perfect location to access Milford and Doubtful Sounds as well as some of New Zealand’s best hikes.
Rooms range from small dorms to private and ensuite rooms. There is also plenty of free off street parking within the complex. For information on prices visit their website at:
Glowworm Caves with Real Journeys
Our Te Anau Glowworm Caves excursion began with a scenic cruise across beautiful Lake Te Anau to the western shores on board the catamaran Luminosa. Standing on the top deck of this luxury vessel provided us with magnificent views of the dense rainforest and surrounding mountains, including Mount Luxmore.
After we disembarked from the cruise the large number of passengers were divided into small groups of 14. Our nature guide Chris led us into the dynamic and exciting environment of the caves by path and a small boat.
This underground network of caves, lit by thousands of glowworms is hidden beneath the mountains on Lake Te Anau’s western shores. The enchanting underworld of the glowworms is like nothing I have ever seen before. The unusual limestone cave, the magnificent waterfalls and the luminous shimmer of thousands of glowworms makes you feel as though you are in a fairytale.
Deep inside the caves, beyond the roar of the water, we boarded a small boat and entered a silent hidden cave where thousands of glowworms inhabited. In the subterranean darkness, they produce a glittering display that is just spectacular.
After our enthralling adventure real journeys provided complimentary tea and coffee as we watched a documentary on the lifecycle of a glowworm. The total experience took just over 2hours and is a definite ‘must do’ during your time at Te Anau.
Fiordland on Film
WOW.
Created by a helicopter pilot who has lived and worked in the Fiordland for over 20years this film features some of the most awe inspiring landscapes on earth.
Filmed across extremes of season, climate and terrain Fiordland on Film is mysterious, evocative, exhilarating and utterly spectacular. I have never seen anything like it and I doubt I ever will again.
The movie was produced over a period of 5 years after which the Fiordland Cinema was purposely built for its premier in 2004. The seats are huge and extremely comfortable! It is like being in gold class but for only $10!
This movie is something that words cannot describe- you will just have to see it for yourself.
