TONGARIRO

The Château

The Chateau Tongariro sits nestled in the shadow of three towering active volcanoes, at the very foot of the majestic and sacred Mount Ruapehu. The Tongariro National Park is a dual listed World Heritage Area and provides a stunning natural playground bursting with diverse landscapes for visitors to the Chateau to discover.

During winter and spring, you’re literally minutes away from exhilarating ski slopes, well known as the best in New Zealand. Then in summer and autumn guests can explore the breath-taking lunar landscapes, lush rainforest, alpine meadows and pristine rivers. Staying at the Chateau Tongariro literally is an all-seasons, utterly unique experience not to be missed.

Our room was located in the wing of the hotel that was completed in 2005. It features the historical feel in keeping with a category One Heritage building located within the World Heritage National Park but with all the modern amenities. The room boasts a flat screen TV with Sky and a private sleek bathroom with a lovely bath, separate shower and under-floor heating.

With endless opportunities including a round of golf on the highest course in New Zealand, a fitness room and sauna, an in-house cinema and of course skiing or snow boarding and winter, you will never be bored at The Chateau.

Maree the marketing manager took us out for dinner to their signature restaurant located within the Chateau Tongariro. The restaurant delivers the finest ambience and all the sophistication expected of the Chateau’s elegant traditions.

As we relaxed with a glass of their finest wine under the soft glow of chandeliers, breathing in the warmth of the open fire and listening to the sublime sounds of their resident pianist I was instantly swept back in time. Swept to a time when outstanding service that is second-to-none and superb Pacific-Rim dining was completely normal. We also had a buffet breakfast in the Ruapehu Restaurant, which was a veritable feast of cooked and continental selections. Needless to say I will not need to eat for the rest of the week!
