MATAMATA

Wairere Falls Farm Cottage

Wairere Falls Farm Cottage offers fully self-contained accommodation on a working dairy farm. The Cottage offers exquisite views of the Wairere Falls in the dramatic Kaimai Ranges. With the Wairere Falls track and many other exciting walks so close by, guests to the lodge will have endless native bushland to explore.

This private farm cottage has three bedrooms and can sleep up to six people. The main bedroom features a queen size bed, and the other two offer two singe beds and a set of bunks.

The open plan fully-equipped kitchen and dinning area provides spectacular views of the falls while the separate lounge room includes comfy couches, TV and a cozy and warm log fire. The bathroom has a full sized bath and a separate shower. There is also a laundry complete with a washing machine and drier.

Heather and Steve are very friendly and showed us the tricks and the trades of farm life. They even showed us how to milk a cow!

Hobiton movie set tours

For all you Lord of the Rings fans out their, this is the tour for you. On the picturesque private farmland near Matamata in the North Island, you can visit the remnants of the original Hobbiton Movie Set from The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.

In a fascinating two-hour guided tour you will be able to stand under the party tree, crawl into Bilbo and Frodo’s Hobbit hole “Bag End”, and walk the road that the Hobbits once walked.

We were lucky enough to have Ian Brodie, the author of The Lord of the Rings Location Guide Book as our guide. His extensive knowledge of the Lord of the Rings films was incredible as he explained all about what was needed to create the Hobbiton set and shared stories of the happenings during filming.

The Hobbiton Movie Set is being returned to its natural state, with 17 of the original 37 Hobbit holes remaining. There are spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges from the rolling green hills of the movie set, which is still a working sheep and beef farm. As the Hobbiton Movie Set is located on a working farm, they also offer authentic and unforgettable Sheep Farm Experiences.

After we experienced the life of a Hobbit in the Shire, we relaxed back at The Shires Rest Café and enjoyed some lunch whiles soaking up the unique atmosphere.

Prices for adults are $64 and for children $5. For more information on where the tours depart from please visit their website: www.hobbitontours.com
