WASHPEN FALLS

With Full On

Just over an hours drive from Christchurch, Washpen Falls offers unique recreational and outdoor activities in a breathtaking natural setting. There are fascinating walking tracks through the canyons formed by an ancient volcano. Walks are open to the public, however a donation in the honest box is required before you start. For those of you who are keen on the more adventurist activities, Full On can offer you a tripod of adrenalin rushes including the abseiling, the giant swing, and the leap of faith.

www.exploretainment.com

Liz the marketing manger of Full On and our personal tour guide for the day guided us through lush native bush tracks to a country styled dinning area alongside an idyllic lake. (The original owner created the lake for the purpose of generating private hydro electricity generation). This is where we had a safety debrief and prepared for our activities by putting on a harness and helmet. For free walkers, this is a great place to stop and have afternoon or morning tea.

www.exploretainment.com

Once we were in our harnesses and Liz checked to see they were on properly we walked to our first activity on the list, abseiling (don’t stress if your harness comes loose during the walk because they check your harness before every activity). We abseiled from a platform that was 100ft from the ground! The scariest part is the beginning because you have to lean back into your harness as you step backwards into thin air. You have to remind yourself that it is completely SAFE and you are connected by several ropes- of course this never works and I find myself imagining ways that I could fall to my death. After the initial part is over it’s easy sailing to the bottom. Try and take in the view as hard as it might be because it is absolutely stunning (by this I mean- don’t close your eyes all the way to the bottom!!).

www.exploretainment.com

www.exploretainment.com

Second stop was the giant swing- it’s not as giant or as scary as what you think but it definitely does get the heart rate going! First off you are connected to a safety rope as you climb about 20metres up a tree. (The tree has pegs to put your feet on as you climb). Once you reach the top there will be an instructor who will connect you to the swing. 20metres may not seem that high but when you are already nestled halfway up a mountain it is high enough! When you build up the balls to actually jump, your stomach is left back on the launch pad as you freefall for about a second. Then it’s like being on a giant swing as the name suggests. It was so much fun I did it a second time! In which case I asked if it was possible to do a flip and Paul the instructor just laughed and said no.

The third and final activity is the leap of faith, which I believe was the scariest of the three. However Liz told us that it’s a close tie between the swing and the leap of faith for most people. So if you ever do participate in them let me know which one you think is the scariest! The leap of faith consists of ‘leaping’ out to a trapeze bar from a ledge in a tree. Sound a bit technical? Once again you’re required to climb up the tree in order to get to the ledge, except this time you are on a smaller ledge and you’re by yourself. The trapeze honestly seems impossible to grab but that is the last thing on my mind as the thought of me plunging to my death creeps back into my head! Then of course the countdown starts 3, 2, 1… So I bend my knees, crouch down and jump as high as I can.

Whooooo I got it!!

All in all it was a really awesome day!

METHVEN

Located an easy one hour drive south of Christchurch, Methven is a popular year round South Island holiday destination for visitors who enjoy ‘the great outdoors’. It is only 45minutes from Mt. Hutt, which I have been told is one of the best ski fields in New Zealand.

Wicked Camper Van

www.exploretainment.com

We finally have our wicked van!! It is awesome and very kiwi ☺ Check out the photos- I love that it’s pink!

The purpose of the NZ map is to mark all the places we visit with a permanent pen.

YHA Methven, Mt Hutt Village Flashpackers

YHA Flashpackers is situated in the town centre of Methven so is a great place to stay during the winter season if you are a keen skier or snowboarder (only 45 minutes away).

The hostel provides guests with clean, modern and affordable bed and breakfast style backpacker lodge accommodation. It is a very up-market backbackers that provides a free continental breakfast every morning as well as complimentary tea and coffee all day.

The kitchen and bathrooms are up to date with modern décor and furnishings. There is also a spa pool that we didn’t get to use, which looked very inviting. The communal dinning area is really comfy and offers wireless Internet connection as well as Sky TV. We met some really cool people there who came from all different parts of the world.

We were only walking distance from Methven’s many cafes, restaurants and shops. There are two supermarkets just about on the Backpackers doorstep. We bought groceries from one of the supermarkets and cooked our own meals.

DIAMOND HARBOUR

It was a shame that we couldn’t spend more time here because the harbour is magnificent! It is such a quaint English style town with spectacular views from most of the restaurants and cafes.

Bergli Farm

Bergli Farm is nestled on the top of Bergli Hill in Diamond Harbour. The view and tranquillity from their 40hectare farm is just astonishing. The view speaks for itself just by looking at the photos, which do not give justice to how amazing it truly is.
www.exploretainment.com

www.exploretainment.com

Rowena and Max designed and built their dream chalet about 14 years ago for the purpose of opening a bed and breakfast one day. They opened their home as B&B 9 years ago and have established a very high standard of hospitality.

There are three guest rooms with a queen and a single bed in each, and the possibility of an extra bed. I stayed in the Lavender Room and it was just beautiful. There is a strong Japanese influence throughout the house from the years that Rowena and Max spent in Japan.

www.exploretainment.com

Whatever your holiday plan is, whether it is adventure based, sightseeing, hiking or just relaxing Bergli Farm can offer it all. We arrived at around 6.30pm after a very long day in Akaroa. Cat and I had something to eat, unpacked then relaxed into the spa overlooking the whole of Diamond Harbour. It honestly felt like a sanctuary retreat from the hub and buz where you really can unwind.

www.exploretainment.com

www.exploretainment.com

For breakfast Rowena made fresh blueberry muffins using blueberries picked from her garden. Not your traditional breakfast but I personally think it was much better than fried eggs and bacon!

Before breakfast Max the ‘speed demon’ took me for a spin on his quad bike up the mountain on meter wide dirt tracks. I fed alpacas, met his cows and had an amazing view from the very top of the mountain behind his Chalet. All in all it was a very fun morning! Max is such a character you can’t help but laugh with im as he tells stories and does funny dances with the Alpacas.

One of the other guests from Japan was participating in Rowena’s and Max’s English Academy. This specializes in small groups and one-to-one tuition, through experiencing farm based activities. 15 hours of formal tuition and 15 hours of chosen activities make up one week of study.

We were quite sad we could only spend one night here but I would definitely recommend the Bergli Farm Stay B&B to anyone visiting Diamond Harbour.

AKAROA

Day 3 (Monday) was the first ‘actual’ start of Cat’s (photographer) and my road trip adventure. So we set off to wicked campers all excited to see our custom painted entirely kiwi wicked van but it wasn’t ready! Thankfully Vanessa (the organiser of this trip and the Entirely World Famous New Zealand Tour) lent us her car to use just until Wednesday when our van will be ready. Hopefully. Naturally you could call this strike one but we persisted on and started our road trip to the first destination Akaroa.

Akaroa harbour is honestly stunning. It is actually the crater of an extinct volcano and over time has adopted the French way of life. It is such a beautiful little town that will be sure to take your breath away. The town attracts holidaymakers from all over the world and offers an array of cafes, restaurants and shops.

Akaraoa makes for a great day trip from Christchurch- it only took just over an hour for us to drive there, or you could experience the culture of Akaroa by spending a few nights there. There are so many different ways to view the harbour and all of them offer something unique.

www.exploretainment.com

www.exploretainment.com

We had some dinner at a restaurant right on the water called Truby's and watched the sun set. The Blue Cod with fries and salad is really nice and cheap!

www.exploretainment.com

This is was my third night in New Zealand and my first time staying at a hostel. Everyone thought it was hilarious that I came in with my huge suitcase when they all had backpacks. When I say huge I mean 27kg + a smaller suitcase that weighed in at 9kg. What can I say I don’t know how to pack light. They also thought it was very strange that I had my own pillowcase and slept inside my sleeping bag so I didn’t touch the sheets. Kind of embarrassing!

Black Cat Cruises Dolphin Swim

AMAZING
Imagine no glass walls, no barricade, and NO CAPTIVITATY. Just you surrounded by the Pacific Ocean (the largest ocean in the world) and lots and lots of dolphins. This truly is one of New Zealand’s premier eco-marine experiences.

We woke up at 7am very tired and grumpy from the night before. Dorms are a lot of fun but you do not get very much sleep in them! The tour begins with a prepping about what is to be expected of the day. We put on our very ‘comfy’ wetsuits and headed for the jets awaiting us. Yes the wet suites are not very comfortable or attractive but they definitely work in keeping you warm in the water! Plus everyone is in the same attire so its actually quite funny. (Masks and snorkels are also provided along with the wetsuit).

The group was divided and we all piled into the two modern jet powered catamarans. As we were cruising along the Akaroa harbour at high speeds, everyone had their eyes peeled for the hector’s dolphin. The first person to make a false sighting had to enter the water first- thankfully it wasn’t me! The hector’s dolphin is the smallest, rarest dolphin in the world and Akaroa Harbour is the only place on the planet where you can swim with these amazing creatures.

www.exploretainment.com

www.exploretainment.com

We jetted from the Akaroa Township all the way to the volcanic sea-cliffs of the Pacific Ocean. As we took in the stunning scenery and wildlife the skippers told us informative local stories about the wildlife and fascinating geological history. Before we even swum with the dolphins we were able to enjoy the company of a variety of exotic marine life including seals, penguins, and of course the hector’s dolphin.

www.exploretainment.com

There is only one word to describe swimming with these amazing mammals in their natural habitat and that is MAJESTIC. As you are stepping down the ladder into the water you become overwhelmed with feelings of excitement/fear and it really is exhilarating.

At first the water is freezing and you subconsciously hold your breath as you ‘gracefully’ enter the water. All is forgotten as soon as you see the first dolphin only a meter away from you! Everyone is silent at first, concentrating on trying to attract the dolphins and careful not to touch them. The hector’s dolphin is endangered and very susceptible to human diseases so it is really important not to reach out and touch them- even though it is very tempting. After a while everyone starts having fun singing and laughing while more dolphins come to play.

www.exploretainment.com

www.exploretainment.com

www.exploretainment.com

Once back on board the catamaran everyone received a complimentary hot chocolate to warm us up. We all drank our hot chocolates whilst watching the New Zealand fur seal lazing on the rocks near the harbour entrance- they are such funny creatures. Did you know they actually absorb their oxygen from the sun! (Just some useless facts for you).

Hot showers are available for use once you return back to the dock and before you know it the adventure is over ☹

Black Cat Cruises operate daily from Akaroa Main Wharf at 6.00am, 11.30am and 1.30pm. You should allow three hours for you Dolphins Up Close adventure.

Prices for adults are $130 (watching $70) and $110 for children (watching $35).

Fox11 Sail Ship

If you thought swimming with dolphins would be enough for one day, think again. What a day huh!? In the afternoon we boarded the Fox11 Sail Ship with 29 other tourists. The Fox11 was originally built as a sailing cargo carrier back in 1922 and then as a fishing boat up until 1970. After being sold and bought a few more times, the Fox landed in the hands of Roy its current skipper.

Roy is such a character and he definitely adds to the personality of the boat. As you relax and soak up the sun, atmosphere and wildlife Roy will give commentary on everything from the million dollar house listings on Akaroa hill to facts about the local Maori history.

www.exploretainment.com

We were able to view the harbour in a very different light as we sailed alongside the hector’s dolphin, the yellow-eyed and blue penguins, New Zealand fur seals and the albatross bird. At one stage I was able to help raise and tie the sails like a true ‘seaman’.

Departs daily at 10:30am and 1:30pm from Daly’s Wharf behind the Akaroa Visitor Centre late December thru May. Once again you need to allow 3hours for your sailing adventure. Prices start from $65 for adults and $30 for children.

CHRISTCHURCH

My arrival

www.exploretainment.com

www.exploretainment.com

www.exploretainment.com

I HAVE FINALLY ARRIVED!! After a long, exhausting and exciting arrival yesterday I am slowly getting into the swing of things. Yesterday morning I departed Brisbane at 9am with Pacific Blue (Virgin Blue) and arrived in Christchurch at 3pm. First tip- make sure you stick to the baggage limit as they charge $10/kilo and are not very lenient.

www.exploretainment.com

www.exploretainment.com

I am staying at City Centre Motel in Christchurch and its really nice. Tina and Mary made me feel very much at home by helping me carry my bags to the room and bringing me some milk for my tea in the morning. Second tip- remember a brush! Of course I gave myself only 10 minutes to get ready for my welcome party and what do I realise, I’ve forgotten my hair brush! It’s amazing how useful a fork can be when your desperate.

Entirely Kiwi organised a party at the Tap Room in my honour, in which the Mayor of Christchurch attended. Mayor Parker (or Bob as he so kindly asked me to call him) presented an insightful speech on tourism in Christchurch and provided me with some must see destinations. Bob and is wife Joanne gave me a New Zealand all blacks hat as a welcome gift, which I will be sure to treasure.

www.exploretainment.com

www.exploretainment.com

The Tap room has been operating since October 2001, and is one of New Zealand's premium locations to relax and enjoy a cold Monteiths beer. Set on the banks of the Avon River and centrally located in the heart of the city, I have been informed that this is the spot to be when dinning out in Christchurch.

The bar and restaurant was the perfect place to host my welcome party as it is one of the best indoor/outdoor environments in Christchurch. The staff were very friendly and professional and created an amazing night for everyone involved.

City Centre Motel

Don’t be fooled by the term ‘motel’. Tina and Mary have done a great job in ensuring you receive top quality service. My room is a very modern and spacious with a double bed, spa bath, plasma tv and comfy couch. The rooms are equipped with wireless internet and no need to bring your hair dryer because they have that too!

www.exploretainment.com

www.exploretainment.com

Tina and Mary are committed to ensuring the highest possible standard of cleanliness and customer service. City Centre is an environmentally friendly motel through the use of
- Biodegradable (re-cycled) products
- Re-cycling
- Low energy lighting
- Reduced water usage
- Refillable printer cartridges
- Sourcing supplies from local distributor

www.exploretainment.com

www.exploretainment.com

The best thing about City Centre Motel is that you don’t feel like your in the city yet the city centre is only 3 blocks away! Also the motel offers all of the services you would receive at a 5* hotel at a quarter of the price. All rooms are serviced on a daily basis and a continental breakfast is available on request for $10. Forgotten your razor, toothbrush or toothpaste? No need to go to the shopping centre just take a 2 second stroll to reception where you can purchase these items! You can even unwind from an action packed day with a relaxing massage from the electric back massager available for your use at reception.

Room sizes range from studio apartments to two bedroom and are fully self-contained. Prices start from $139 a night- a very reasonable price for value.

Willowbank

Love animals? Love nature? Love natural wildlife? Love good food? Well Willowbank wildlife reserve and restaurant is must see during your stay at Christchurch. Jo Moore the marketing manager for Willowbank took me on a personalised tour through the reserve today. One word to describe my tour is WOW. I met some very interesting animals including flick the monkey, Mr Gibbon the chimp (my made up name for him), Sam the talking cockatoo and of course New Zealand’s native animal the Kiwi- my first encounter with a kiwi ☺.

www.exploretainment.com

www.exploretainment.com

Close encounters with the animals are a Willowbank trademark. I got to feed the wild eels (I had goosebumps the whole time!), feed the Kia bird while it climbs onto my head and shoulders and make friends with the livestock breeds unique to New Zealand. You can also get up and close to real Lemur- the animals in madagascar!
