My last day finally arrived. As much as I was looking forward to seeing all my friends and family, I was quite sad that the trip was all over ☹ However, I am not done yet, I am going to write a travel book about the top 100 best spots to visit and things to do in NZ. So stayed tuned…

Central Park Motel

Central Park Motor Lodge is a modern motel style accommodation situated near Christchurch city on the edge of Hagley Park. The motel is walking distance to the Botanic Gardens, Christchurch Museum, The Arts Centre, Galleries and several other facilities. Its prime location also meant that it was only a 10 minutes drive to the International Airport, which was very handy as my flight was at 6am.

The motel features 14 very spacious self-contained and well-appointed units. Kathy and Harry were great hosts and made my last night in New Zealand very memorable. Kathy showed me to my room and provided me with maps and information on Christchurch.

My one bedroom unit featured a large open plan living, dining and kitchen area with a single bed, a private bathroom and a queen sized bed in the Master bedroom. The room was very modern, with stylish furnishings and a very large TV.

The best part of all was that they offer free internet, which is a luxury I rarely came across on my 3 month tour.

Air New Zealand

Air New Zealand is an international and domestic airline group which provides air passenger and cargo transport services within New Zealand, as well as to and from Australia, the South West Pacific, Asia, North America and the United Kingdom.

It was an early rise for me, waking up at 2.30am and picked up by the airport shuttle at 3.30am. I had a good flight with Air New Zealand apart from the fact that they are not very lenient with their extra baggage. However the service was very friendly and helpful.

Whale Watch Kaikoura

Off the coastline of Kaikoura is a marine environment so rich in nutrients that it attracts some of the most magnificent creatures, including the Giant Sperm Whale that can grow up to 20 metres and weighs over 50 tons. These whales can be seen all year round making Kaikoura a Mecca for whale watching.

Offering visitors an exciting up-close encounter with the Giant Sperm Whale, Whale Watch Kaikoura is committed to providing not only a quality experience, but ensuring the long term sustainability of Kaikoura’s natural resources.

After having some lunch in the café on-site we all huddled in the briefing room to watch an interesting and educational video on Sperm Whales followed by a safety brief. After we were well informed of the dangers with whale watching we boarded the modern catamaran. This state-of-the-art vessel is equipped with engines that minimise underwater noise pollution, comfortable indoor seating and large outside decks, which are great for viewing and photo opportunities.

On our journey out to the whales Megan provided us with a very informative commentary on what makes the area such a perfect spot for whale spotting. In the background a large plasma screen displayed award-winning marine wildlife animations. She also informed us on the names of the whales that live near Kaikoura at various times of the year, which brought a more personal touch to the tour.

Once we were thought to be in the right area our captain Jamie listened out for the whales using a hydrophone. Then we were off again, until eventually we saw the plume of spray jet up several metres.

With cameras in hand, everyone ran out to the viewing decks with an excitement that is kept for truly wonderful moments. We all marvelled at the humongous sperm whale only 50 metres away, little did we know the best was still to come.

After watching the whale float on the surface for about 10 minutes before diving deep into the undersea canyon, we were off again searching for more whales. When I saw captain Jamie’s feet tapping with excitement and a large grin across Megan’s face I knew we were in for something special.

Anticipation building I was extremely excited for what ever awaited us. Without telling us what it was we were about to see, the cabin crew opened the doors and everyone rushed out onto the viewing deck. Every eye watching the surface, we all let out sighs of excitement as we saw the world’s largest dolphin, the Orca, come up for air. What a great ending to the tour!

Mandy the owner and operator of Waterfront Apartments checked us in to a well-appointed spacious and modern 2 bedroom room. Mandy was a great host, extremely friendly and helpful. She organised the Whale Watch Tour as well as the dolphin encounter as we didn’t have anything planned for Kaikoura.

Our two bedroom unit featured a full kitchen, laundry facilities, 40 plus channels on Sky Digital, Wireless broadband, a private balcony and a luxurious spa bath. The room was very sleek, stylish and spacious offering magnificent views of the ocean.

Only a 10 minute stroll to the centre of town, this a fabulous place to stay while exploring all that Kaikoura has to offer.

Dolphin Encounter Kaikoura

By far the coolest, most majestic, awe-inspiring, gob smacking activity I have participated in during the whole three months in New Zealand. What a way to end my trip.

Not only is Kaikoura a Mecca for whale watching, it is a very popular destination for other marine wildlife including DOLPHINS. Dolphin Encounter tour is a viewing or swimming tour with the flamboyant and very sociable dusky dolphins.

The Waterfront Apartments is only 100 metres away from the Dolphin Encounter, which was great as it was an early rise for my dolphin swim. After we were given a wetsuit and our snorkel gear, we watched a safety brief before boarding the bus. The 5 minutes bus ride transported us to the modern catamaran, which has a cruise speed of about 22 knots and is specially designed for dolphin viewing.

Our narrator and host Malaina was such a character. She had us in fits of laughter from the get go. Her passion and vast knowledge for Kaikoura’s marine life was incredible.

After traveling for about 45 minutes and only encountering a pod of 4 dolphins, whom were not very interested in us at all, we thought that the chances of us swimming with dolphins were slim to none. As our spirits started to dim, Malaina told us to put the rest of our snorkel gear on as they had received word from Wings over Wales that there was a very large pod of dolphins.

As far as the eye could see, was a dark shadow in the ocean, white splashes on the surface and dolphin fins rising through the water. Jumping up and down with a huge smile on my face I couldn’t help but scream with excitement. There was honestly over 500 dolphins swimming towards our boat at great speeds- that was the first time I was nervous.

We all sat on the back of the boat eagerly waiting for the captain to signal that the propellers were off and it was safe for us to enter the water. As soon as the horn went off we all gently glided off the back of the boat.

It was honestly the most amazing experience to be surrounded by hundreds of these majestic creatures. Singing like crazy, I know I sounded like a complete dork to the observers on the boat, but the dolphins seemed to be enjoying my song. They came within millimeters, dancing with me and doing 360 degree turns as I tried to keep to the one tune. Everywhere I looked there was a dolphin. It was just incredible.

As if things couldn’t get much better, when I was resting on the back of the boat (it is really tiring trying to keep up with the dolphins) I saw two seals playing amongst the pod. I quickly put my mask and snorkel back on and dived into the water. They are just as playful as the dolphins just much faster and harder to keep up with.

When the horn sounded for us to board the boat, we all sighed with disappointment. However on board the vessel warm showers, hot chocolate and yummy biscuits awaited us. What an adventure!

Stagland’s Wildlife Reserve (on the way to Welington)

Staglands Wildlife Reserve offers a unique and fun experience for people of all ages to feed and freely interact with native wildlife in the most majestic environment. Located an hours drive from Wellington in the beautiful Akatarawa Valley in Upper Hutt, Staglands is a hidden treasure.

Sarah the owner and Sarah the manager took us on a wonderful tour around the premises where we were able to come face to face with friendly animals, native birds and other magnificent wildlife.

First we walked through the forest wetlands, which has been extensively vegetated and provides shelter and breeding sites for a range of native and introduced waterfowl.

From here we visited the Barn, which is available during the day for all park visitors to use as a picnic or BBQ area (BBQ facilities provided free of charge). It can also be hired as a venue for special events and functions.

As we walked into the deer park the first thing I noticed was the grand rolling hills overlooking Staglands and the watchful gaze of the fallow deer roaming the hills. We were greeted by a herd of friendly goats and a lovely old ram called Hector.

Next we visited the stables where I was able to hop in and hold one of the wee little wabbits. We also stopped to see the young chicks being reared under a heat lamp in the brooder.

To get to the Old Bush Settlement we crossed the river via an awesome swing bridge. The Old Bush Settlement is a nostalgic recreation of an abandoned Akatarawa bush settlement and gives a unique view of the life led by the pioneers during the early settlement of New Zealand.

I could honestly go on forever; there is so much to do at Staglands. I haven’t even mentioned the blue duck breeding program, the donkey rides, the bush railway (cart ride), the flying fox and children’s area, the aviaries, the secret garden and the trout fish ponds.

After our tour we had a delectable homemade lunch at the Staglands Café. The café is fully licensed and features a cozy interior with impressive wooden trusses, beams and posts with a large open fire.

YHA Wellington Backpackers

This modern, bright and fun YHA hostel has a wide range of comfortable backpacker accommodation from their spacious 4-share ensuite rooms to their deluxe private ensuite rooms.

With a 5-star qualmark rating it hardly felt like a backpackers but more like a hotel or a ‘flash’packers. The YHA Wellington boasts two large and well-equipped kitchens, many spacious and comfortable lounge areas and a TV lounge with a projector and free movie hire.

Centrally located just off Courtenay place, it is located close to the waterfront, Te Papa museum, Embassy Cinema and many cafés, bars and restaurants. There is also a New World directly across the road, which was extremely handy. For those who are really on a budget there is always affordable meal nights and free bagel breakfast on Mondays.

Our room was quite spacious and featured a modern clean private bathroom. There was also an alarm clock on the bedside table and tea/coffee making facilities.

Bluebridge Ferry

I can’t believe the time has come to head back to the South Island via the Bluebridge Ferry. With stunning scenery, friendly service, free big screen movies and a choice of up to four return sailings a day (except Christmas Day) between Wellington and Picton – there’s no better way for you and your vehicle to cross Cook Strait.

Launched in 2003, Bluebridge sails every day between New Zealand’s North and South Islands. With a journey time of three hours and 20 minutes, the Bluebridge experience offers friendly ‘Kiwi’ hospitality amidst stunning New Zealand scenery.

Currently operating two sister ships, the Santa Regina and the Monte Stello, the Bluebridge service offers a relaxed journey with a maximum of up to 370 people and around 150 cars per sailing.

The Bluebridge service provides a very comfortable environment for passengers in their relaxing lounge areas, where we watched a free big screen movie and I caught some zzzzz's. There is also comfortable seating in the lounge bar where guests can enjoy a New Zealand wine or beer with a scrumptious snack.

Work stations provided space for me to unpack my laptop and catch up on some business while en-route.

BKs Chardonnay Motor Lodge offers affordable, quality accommodation for business travelers looking for a comfortable place to rest and a base for those holidaying to the north island.

Despite being on the main road it is very quiet and secluded. Kathleen and Terry were great hosts and offered us a very tempting continental or cooked breakfast, however we were having lunch at Staglands Wildlife Reserve so decided to pass.

As we relaxed with a glass of their finest wine under the soft glow of chandeliers, breathing in the warmth of the open fire and listening to the sublime sounds of their resident pianist I was instantly swept back in time. Swept to a time when outstanding service that is second-to-none and superb Pacific-Rim dining was completely normal. We also had a buffet breakfast in the Ruapehu Restaurant, which was a veritable feast of cooked and continental selections. Needless to say I will not need to eat for the rest of the week!

Creel Lodge

Situated in the heart of New Zealand's best trout fishing country, Creel Lodge has its own private access to one of New Zealand’s top fly-fishing rivers. It is set in a unique location amid beautiful gardens, spacious BBQ areas and native wildlife including the Fantail (a native bird).

On arriving at Creel Lodge Richard showed us to our two bedroom garden suite and provided us with information booklets and maps on the region. Our suite had its own outdoor balcony providing a perfect place to sit relax and enjoy the native bush setting. The accommodation has been tastefully furnished, with full cooking facilities and both inside and outside dining areas.

We had a lovely BBQ provided by the owner Peter and his wife, managers Jill and Richard, as well as local tourist providers including Garth from Tongariro River Rafting.

With fishing, hunting, skiing or relaxation in the hot pools at Tokaanu, there is something for everyone in Turangi and Creel is the perfect spot to base your holiday. Richard and Jill were wonderful hosts and we had a lovely stay at this charming lodge. We also enjoyed hearing about Peter's (owner) sailing adventures around Cape Horn from Tasmania to Whitby, (the home port of Captain Cook) on the Replica HMS Bark Endeavour.

Tongiriro River Rafting

The Tongariro River’s most experienced rafting company, Tongariro River Rafting is a 100% Kiwi company owned by local Garth and Leigh Oakden. Garth has been a rafting guide on the Tongariro since 1987 and knows these waters like few others.

Base Backpackers

Centrally located in the centre of town, Base Rotorua offers clean and spacious accommodation in a homely atmosphere. This hostel is a popular choice for groups and adventure-seeking individuals.

Whether it be a dorm room, a girls’ Sanctuary room or a deluxe private room with a kitchen and ensuite, Base has something for everyone. Helpful and friendly staff added to the relaxed and comfortable stay.

Not only does Base have an onsite restaurant and bar but it also has a cinema and indoor rock-climbing wall. With a big screen TV, a sun deck and a thumping dance floor, The Lava Bar is Rotorua's most popular night spot! We met "the locals" as well as travelers from all over the world at this awesome bar. Wednesday night was live music and karaoke night so we had a few laughs with our new friends from Hells Gate and Nzone watching people make douches of themselves on karaoke.

Our private room was at the back of the building secluded from the buzzing Lava Bar. It featured a double and a single bed, a private bathroom and kitchen as well as a back entrance into the carpark.

Nzone Skydiving

Why wouldn’t you jump out of a perfectly good plane, 15000ft above the beautiful lakes of Rotorua just for fun? Sounds like a very reasonable and sane activity to me…

On the 11th of May 2010 I left the faith of my life in the hands of a very experienced skydiving instructor, Paul. The personal challenge of being strapped to nothing but a parachute and hurling yourself towards the ground at 130 miles/hour is immense.

As I started to prepare for my jump, the sign-your-life-away forms were a bit of a reality check. Every paragraph stressed that there is a possibility (however miniscule) that you can die from jumping out of a plane. Okay, palms starting to sweat a little bit… However Paul reassured me that this is just a precautionary procedure and the chances of something actually going wrong is very slim.

After watching an instructional video on what to do and what not to do, Sarah the sales and marketing manager helped me get into my very attractive jump suit and harness.

All geared up I was ready for my flight high above the Rotorua thermal region, where I had a birds eye view of the dramatic geothermal activity and forests. As we were climbing Paul shared his vast knowledge about the region pointing out iconic features of Rotorua.

Trying very hard to take in all the information he was sharing, my brain started to conjure up the ‘what if’ scenarios. ‘What if’ my parachute doesn’t open, ‘What if’ my harness isn’t done up properly, ‘What if’…

“Right we’re at 15000ft” Paul yelled over the noise of the engine. What?? OMG. No turning back now I thought as I was hanging out of the plane, legs dangling in the air. ONE, TWO, THREE…

No words can describe the feeling of free falling to what seems like your death. I didn’t know whether to scream or smile so I just did both. I hope Paul has regained his hearing.

After freefalling for the longest 60 seconds of my life, Paul deployed the parachute and we screamed to a halt (literally- I hadn’t stopped screaming by this point). Taking in the view we slowly glided back to earth. The canopy ride took about 5 minutes and Paul let me have a bit of fun by pulling down hard on one of the cords. Consequently we went round in circles extremely fast and any sense of orientation I had recovered instantaneously disappeared.

The first thing I said once we safely landed was “can I do it again?!”. The whole experience was amazing and I’m so glad my first jump was in Rotorua- the scenery is just spectacular.

River Rafting

A short drive out of Rotorua will bring you to the Kaituna River where you can experience grade 5 rapids, 7 metre high waterfalls, narrow gorges and beautiful flora and fauna.

At the rafting base a 15-minute training session was provided prior to the trip teaching us all the required paddle commands and safety information. Before we entered the water, our guides Stevie and Cory payed their respects to the Kaituna River and to those who once fought on the river. After they said the traditional Maori prayer it was time to hit the rapids.

After running through some precautionary procedures, including what to do if you fall out, we tackled our first challenge, the 1 metre high waterfall. Clapping our paddles together in the air and cheering we celebrated the success of our first waterfall.

Listening to Cory’s commands we all paddled as a team to contend with the grade 5 rapids. Fast and furious we steered our raft through foamy white water, narrowly missing sheer rock walls. The perpendicular cliffs are covered in ferns and other native plants creating a stunning backdrop to this exciting tour.

Time to take the ultimate thrill ride down the awesome 7 meter high Tutea Falls, the worlds highest commercially rafted waterfall. Before you reach the falls there is an escape path for those who want to chicken out and take the walk of shame. No one in my raft chickened out but Stevie told me there have been a few throughout the years.

With my eyes closed and a very tight grip on the ropes in the raft we went over the 7 meter drop. It wasn’t until I we resurfaced that I realised we had lost one of our teammates. Hysterically laughing we helped him back into the boat and had fun with the rest of the river.

We even attempted to stand up on the last set of rapids.

Although this trip provides full on action, it is not technically difficult as every rapid is followed by calm water making it suitable for adventurous beginners. In fact around 70% of customers have never rafted before.

Wingspan Birds of Prey

Wingspan Birds of Prey offers an interactive tour of birds of prey by New Zealand falconers. We learnt about the art of falconry, visited the aviaries, and learnt about these amazing birds through educational displays.

At the top of the food chain, fearless and territorial, raptors seem unlikely candidates in need of sanctuary. However, there are estimated to be only 4,000 pairs of New Zealand native falcons surviving in the wild and Wingspan provides a sanctuary for these endangered raptors. Sick, injured and orphaned birds of prey are brought to Wingspan to be nursed back to health with the aim of eventual return to the wild.

Debbie took us on a guided tour through the museum and aviaries providing very interesting information regarding the New Zealand Falcon and other birds of prey along the way. The aviaries contain a selection New Zealand raptors ranging from the Falcon, Morepork and Hawk. One of my favourite Falcons was Ozzie, named after Ozzie Osbourne because of his reckless behaviour.

After our personal tour we watched Andrew provide a demonstration of the lure, which consists of a chunk of meat being whipped around on a baited line attracting the falcon. Falcons are the fasting flying birds in the world and it was amazing to watch this bird reach up to 200 km/hour trying to catch the piece of meat.

Visitors to Wingspan are recommended at arrive at 1:30 pm. This allows the opportunity to view the museum and aviaries before the flight and lure displays at 2pm. Tours may be tailored for your requirements.

Hells Gate

Hells Gate is Rotorua’s most active thermal park offering a vast range of relaxing and revitalizing treatments. We weren’t feeling so flash after our big night in the Lava Bar so we were really looking forward to our treatments at Hells Gate.

Before our spa treatments Hayden, the marketing and sales manager took us on a 2.5 km natural geothermal walk past boiling mud and hot water pools in excess of 100 degrees centigrade.

So keeping to the paths Hayden led us to the Kakahi Falls, the largest hot water falls in the Southern Hemisphere. The steaming water running over them is around 40 degrees Celsius - just perfect for a luxurious bath or shower.

Another highlight that Hayden brought us to was the largest Mud Volcano in New Zealand. It is an amazing object that stands about 1.8 metres high and has a diameter of about 5 metres. In its centre is a small crater of dark brown and grey boiling mud that could erupt at any minute.

Hayden was an awesome guide and shared his vast knowledge about Hell’s Gate through hilarious anecdotes and jokes. Next on the agenda was our mud bath, sulphur spa and massage, mmmm massage…

For 700 years Hell’s Gate has been treasured by Maori as a place of healing and revitalising. The soothing mud’s and sulphurous waters, which have been guarded for centuries, are kept at 40 degrees Celsius allowing the skin’s pores to open so that all the active ingredience gently exfoliate and treat the skin. It was so relaxing and left my skin feeling smoother than a baby’s bottom!

The Wai Ora Spa offers a range of treatments including massages facials, body wraps and mud scrubs. I experienced their signature Wai Ora total body massage, which was absolutely amazing! It incorporated elements of Miri Miri a traditional Maori massage regime that has been practiced for hundreds of years.

Tamaki Tour

Winner of New Zealand's Supreme Tourism Award and four times winner of the national heritage and cultural tourism awards, The Tamaki experience begins with a journey back in time.

As we travelled by coach to the village, our driver/guide Uncle Wallace lead us back to pre-European times with stories, history and protocols in preparation for the ceremonies to follow. He also nominated a chief for our ‘Waka’ i.e. bus, who lead us into the pre-European village where we received a traditional welcoming ceremony.

Huge crackling open fires in front of traditional whare (houses), the sound of ancient Maori instruments and the activities of the people of days gone by, created an palpable and electric atmosphere.

At the heart of this village, stands the meeting house, where the Rangiatea culture group offer a special glimpse of the many traditions, performance, songs and history of the Maori people. Sitting in awe amongst a crowd of young and old we roared with applause and thanked the tribe by yelling “Kia Ora” between performances.

To top off the 3.5 hour evening experience, we enjoyed a traditionally-cooked feast from their earthen ovens otherwise known as a Hangi. After our meal our lively and humorous hosts shared the secrets of how to make the Hangi as we all gathered around the bon fire.

Oraka Deer Farm

Delightful, sunny, warm and welcoming, the deer farm offers two styles of accommodation- a country cottage or a home stay room.

Over the Moon Cheese Factory

Over the Moon is an adventurous boutique cheesemaking company that uses the world's finest ingredients to make exciting new dairy products, while paying respect to the great traditions of cheese making internationally. Situated in a small factory on State Highway 1 in Putaruru in the heart of the South Waikato, Over the Moon is open for tastings, demonstrations and cheese making courses.

During our cheese tasting we noticed is that the cheese in their store is not your average cheese. They make their handcrafted cheeses from locally sourced cow, goats, sheep and buffalo milk. Their range includes not only traditional hard cheeses like Cheshire and Romano but also a tantalising family of soft and blue cheeses, plus some relatively undiscovered delights like haloumi and washed rind.

After our tasting we were able to see first hand how the cheese is made. We also helped package some of the cheese which was very cool.

Over the Moon Cheese Factory incorporates a delightful range of local ingredients - including 100% New Zealand native flavourings. We took home the Cow Halloumi, which won the Gold Medal in 2008 (Cuisine New Zealand Champion of Cheese Awards) and the OMG Cow Triple Cream Brie, which is also an award winning cheese. Amanda fried the Halloumi with butter, which was divine and we had the Brie with some crackers. Absolutely fabulous!

Raglan Backpackers

The hostel is located on the water’s edge of Raglan’s beautiful harbour and looks out across the water to Mt Karioi. The resort style backpacker provides a comfortable and clean stay in the heart of Raglan, only a one minute walk from the many cafés and artisan shops.

In the centre of the complex is a private courtyard garden, which features hammocks, outdoor furniture and a sauna. Once the sun went down and the night chilled off, I moved into the living room and sat by the cosy fire.

Accommodation ranges from dorm rooms, private rooms or a room in the water front holiday house. This two story house is adjacent to the hostel and has its own living room, kitchen and bathroom. A two hour drive from Dargaville, we arrived at Mercure Auckland Windsor at about 3pm. To my surprise a bunch of birthday balloons, a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates waited in our room for my arrival.

Stretch Hummer with Hummerzine

The big night has finally arrived. You only turn 21 once so I figured why not go all out and not just hire a limousine but a HUMMERZINE!

Whoever said bigger isn’t better, well they were lying. I felt like a movie star travelling around Auckland in a stretch yellow hummer. Everywhere we went people would stop and stare. Flashes were coming from all directions as people took photos of us getting in and out of the Hummer.

The Hummerzine is the coolest limo in the country and seats up to 15 people. With disco lights all around us (including the floor), comfy leather seats, ice boxes for our champagne and our choice of music blaring out of the speakers we had the time of our lives.

After cruising around town for about an hour, the Hummerzine dropped us off at the Sky Tower Casino where we went for dinner and my third birthday cake at the Rotating Restaurant. The restaurant offers the most spectacular views of Auckland as you are eating! You just have to remember where your table is when you go to the ladies room because the middle part doesn't rotate!

Kumara Box Show

Dargaville is known as New Zealand’s Kumara Capital, producing two thirds of New Zealand’s kumara crop and Ernie and May have been contributing to this for centuries. However it was only a few years ago that they decided to turn their kumara production into a tourist attraction and now it is a must see in Dargaville.

As always we travelled in style in Ernie’s old school car with ‘Kumara Box’ written all over it. Literally flooring it, we cruised along the highway 30km/h to the Kumara Box. I was feeling a bit hot so Ernie put the air-conditioning, in other words he wound the windscreen out. Very cool as long as you keep your mouth shut, I didn’t particularly feel like swallowing any bugs.

We finally arrived on Ernies Kumara Farm and Shed/Converted theatre. After we explored a kumara pit and were shown through the humongous shed that stores all of the Kumara, we entered a large spacious room that has been converted into a cinema. Comfy old couches and chairs face the Big Screen which screenplays a DVD of Ernie’s kumara secrets and highlights of the Kaipara region.

It was fascinating, I never knew how much workmanship goes into the production of sweet potatoes. I also never knew how many different types of kumara there is.

Ernie is such a character and May has many stories and secrets of her own that she shared with us. We had such a good time there and Ernie even showed us his prized possession- one of the largest greenstone carvings of “Pourangahua and Hokio” the Legend.

Ernie has a children’s book about the production of kumara, curing methods and the Kumara Show that him and May generously gave me. It’s a great bedtime book- he thought the novel might be to advanced for me. I just look at the pretty pictures that his daughter painted.

Tours run at 2pm Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday- Tea and lunches can be provided if requested. Admission is $15 per person and its worth every dollar!

Museum

The Dargaville Museum is situated in Harding Park overlooking the town, with magnificent views of Toka Toka, Maungaraho and the historic Northern Wairoa River.

Ron Haliday met us in the foyer of the museum, where the carpet has been designed to mimic the deck of a sailing ship. Filled with vast knowledge about New Zealand’s history, Ron guided us through the museum giving us detailed explanations along the way.

We walked through the impressive Kauri Gumdigger Exhibition Hall, which was built by George Sutich. Learnt about the story of the Rainbow Warrior bombing in Auckland Harbour. Visited the largest pre-European Maori canoe on Exhibition in New Zealand and observed the Collections Hall with a working model railway and village. Ron showed us the relics from shipwrecks recovered from the coast and showed us how early settlers lived and worked as they struggled to develop the land.

After our tour we browsed through the museum shop with its wide variety of quality gifts, souvenirs and books. I bought a very cool green and purple beanie, that was hand knitted by a local volunteer.

Incorporated in the museum complex is the Lighthouse Function Centre, which is an excellent venue to hire for all occasions.

Funky Fish

It was Williever's (our wicked van) first time on a beach today! We took the wicked van down onto Ripiro beach to watch the sunset. Ripiro is the longest drivable beach in New Zealand.

Then it was time for dinner at the Funky Fish. Located in Baylys Beach, The Funky Fish Restaurant serves excellent food with very friendly service in a relaxed environment.

The restaurant has innovative international cuisine that you can enjoy inside or out. Their garden offers a private secluded area to enjoy your fish and chips or dine in the restaurant inside. They also have a bar area to enjoy a glass or two of wine before and after eating.

After dinner we had a few drinks in the bar with owner, Beth and her friend Trish. Turns out it was Trish’s birthday on the 7th of May as well. It was also the waitresses birthday on the 7th of May! If that wasn’t weird enough, I was turning 21, Lisa the waitress was turning 31 and Trish was turning 51! Very bizarre… So if you are reading this and you just turned 41 on the 7th of May let me know! We need to find the missing puzzle piece.

Astronomy Adventures

Astronomy Adventures (NZ) offers you an unforgettable visual adventure in the night sky. Unfortunately the weather did not permit our visit to the observatory but I have heard nothing but great things about it.

Based at Baylys Beach they offer you the opportunity to view the stars through a large computerised telescope. See craters on the Moon, the satellites of Jupiter, the rings of Saturn, the phases of Venus, as well as countless star clusters, globular clusters, and galaxies. Marvel at the Milky Way, our very own Galaxy. All viewed from the superbly dark skies of their Northland location, away from both light and air pollution.

Birthday Breakfast

In the morning we went for breakfast at Jo’s Restaurant and Bakery with Sue and Rick Taylor from the i-site and Woodturners Studio/Gallery, Ray from Dargaville Campervan Park and Cabins, and Lynley Thomspon from Colville Estate. It was a lovely breakfast and they gave me a bottle of ‘Kumara’ vodka on behalf of Dargaville.

Lynley baked me a cake, that had happy birthday Nicquel written in icing on it. With her husband Karl she runs the Colville Estate, a self-contained bed and breakfast. They provide one queen sized bedroom and a sofa bed in the lounge room. Continental breakfast is provided, as well as complimentary tea, coffee and milk.

After breakfast Ray showed us around his complex, which is right next door to Jo’s Restaurant and Bakery. Dargaville Campervan Park and Cabins offer affordable character accommodation in the heart of Dargaville. Either stay in their railway carriages that have been converted into cabins with ensuites, or stay in a campervan/caravan with the option of having your own ensuite. The kitchen/dining area is well appointed, with a full range of utensils and has an adjacent laundry. There is also a large TV/games/recreation room.

The Woodturners Kauri Gallery and Working Studio

Rick has been woodturning for over 30 years and has a very impressive collection of Kauri products. Everything you see in the gallery has been created and produced by Rick himself. The many colours and grains found in the ancient Kauri wood featured in the turned pieces is just spectacular.

All of the pieces in the Gallery, Corporate Gift, Kauri Paper and Tool sections are available to purchase. They can also ship/post your purchases home.

After we had a wander around the Gallery and observed all of Rick’s remarkable creations, he showed us how to make a pen on the woodlathe. I watched him turn a rectangle piece of kauri into a beautiful pen. Watching Rick in action on the woodlathe, you can see the passion he feels for woodturning. It was incredible to watch and he did it all in a about 15 minutes. Every time he would carve a layer of wood off, I noticed a new shade of colour and grain.

At the end he presented me with the pen and wished me a Happy Birthday. What an amazing gift!

Kauri Museum

The Kauri Museum celebrates the heritage of New Zealand’s giant kauri trees and their related industries. The first European traders on these shores, more than 200 years ago, came to cut kauri for masts and spars. Subsequently, kauri became the basis of a vast timber industry all represented in the displays of this museum.

Our host Betty Nellie was lovely and showed us around the huge museum, providing a stimulating insight into the kauri history. She told us stories about how settlers harvest timber and gum from the giant trees, what they were used for and what life was like in early New Zealand.

We started off in Tudor Collins Wing, which showcases fine kauri furniture, lovely timber panels, carving, lace, clothing, textiles and embroidery. Then we moved on to the Ross Wing and Gum Room featuring the world’s best kauri gum display. The only word to describe their collection is WOW.

A real mill shows how logs were sawn into timber. Life-like mannequins represent local settler families and moving saws, flat belts, countershafts, pulleys and steam engines create the scene of a steam sawmill.

The tour ended in the souvenir shop where we admired beautiful quality kauri souvenirs, books, jewellery, postcards, clocks and kauri gum. Betty gave me and Amanda a square piece of Kauri to remember them by.

Matakohe House B&B and licensed Café

An easy 1 minute walk from the Kauri Museum, Matakohe House B&B is the closest café and accommodation to the museum. The fully licensed café is open daily for morning and afternoon teas and delicious lunches. All their food is cooked on the premises, and served with a big smile. Evening meals are available; however, bookings are essential.

Matakohe House has quickly gained a reputation amongst the locals as a very pleasant place to spend time enjoying good coffee and the comfortable atmosphere. For the convenience of the travelling public, toilets (wheelchair friendly) are provided within the cafe complex. Also available to the coach crews is an area in which they can relax, read the newspaper or watch television while their passengers enjoy the varied attractions available at Matakohe.

Acacia Lodge

Set on the water’s edge of historic Mangonui, Acacia Lodge provides spectacular views of the Harbour from just about every room.

Quad Biking on 90 Mile Beach- Ahipara Adventure Centre

Ahipara Adventure Centre is the gateway to 90 Mile Beach and offers an extensive range of adventure-orientated hire equipment suitable for all ages and interests.

From quad bikes to blow-karts to surfboards to mountain bikes to sand toboggans, you name it and they will most probably have it. We opted for the quad bikes and had a blast driving up and down 90 Mile Beach, 90miles an hour! The quad bikes are available for freedom hire to any person with a valid driver’s licence. Each bike is fully automatic and instructions maps and directions are all provided. Not that you could get lost- once you are on the beach there is only one way to go.

We stuck to the basic stuff and drove along the coastal beach however for the more skilled and adventurous riders you can take the quad bike for a spin over the rocks and sand dunes at Reef Point.

However you decide to experience it, 90 Mile beach is a must see during your time in Northland.

World Famous Manganui Fish Shop

On our way back to the Acacia Lodge we stopped off at the ‘World Famous’ Mangonui Fish shop to grab the freshest fish and chips New Zealand has to offer. On our drive to the shop I found myself wondering what makes it so famous?

When we arrived we were gobsmacked by the amount of people lining up to catch their fish and chips. There must have been about 40 people in a queue that stretched all the way out of the shop and into the car park.

The fully licensed restaurant is located on a pier over the water in the majestic Mangonui Village. As we joined the back of the queue we spoke to some of the tourists who had flocked from near and far just to try Mangonui’s famous fish and chips.

You can takeaway of dine in the festive atmosphere on their all-weather deck looking out over the picturesque Doubtless Bay. We chose from a range of fresh seafood and enjoyed our fish and chips as the sea washed gently beneath our feet.

Having been voted several times as the best fish and chips in New Zealand it is a must see while in the North. You won't find anywhere else like the world-famous Mangonui Fish Shop.

Honestly some of the best baked potatoes I have ever had (sorry mum).

Tapeka Del Mar Beachfront Holiday House

This luxury waterfront beach house accommodation offers modern spacious living with breath taking views. The holiday rental is situated on a sandy swimming beach at the gateway to New Zealand’s famous Bay of Islands.

Sitting on a sun lounger enjoying the 180-degree view of the bay I noticed about 4 or 5 fins rise out of the water. All of the kids ran down to the beach to play with the pod of dolphins that were swimming very close to the shoreline. What a perfect ending to a wonderful stay.

Hole in the Rock Cruise with Fuller’s Great Sights

The Bay of Islands is a stunning region consisting of 144 islands, abundant natural wonder and marine life, that I got to experience to the full with Fullers Great Escape Hole in the Rock Cruise. The awe-inspiring journey brought us up close to dolphins, penguins, seals, a diverse range of birdlife and of course the Hole in the Rock.

As we cruised through the sheltered waters of the Bay of Islands, I enjoyed the large outdoor viewing decks on the purpose built dolphin and whale watching catamaran. I couldn’t believe my luck when we saw another pod of dolphins putting on a parade for us. Either it was the same group of dolphins I had been seeing during my stay in the Bay of Islands or I am just very lucky. Either way if you are a dolphin fan I highly recommend a trip to the Bay of Islands.

Soaking up some rays I absorbed the views as we sailed past the Cape Brett Lighthouse, before arriving at the majestic Hole in the Rock.

Along with the other passengers I flurried to the bow of the boat to admire the rock walls, which soar above as the skipper navigated us through the narrow space of the “Hole”. On the other side of the Grand Cathedral Cave we encountered a very large school of fish. It was very cool!

The captain gave a very informative commentary along the way, sharing stories about the history of the Bay of Islands and the iconic Hole in the Rock. On the return journey, passengers had the option of disembarking the vessel and exploring Otehei Bay Resort on a secluded island.

Base Pipi Patch Lodge Backpackers

This Base Backpackers is located in the heart of Paihia in the Bay of Islands. Only 50 metres from the beach and only a short stroll to Paihia’s seaside resort restaurants, cafes and ferry terminals, you couldn’t get more central.

The hostel offers accommodation from private units to share dorms and features a spa and swimming pool, set in a sunny courtyard amongst palm trees. The backpackers cooks a Kiwi BBQ each evening which you can enjoy with a drink in the Pipi Patch Bar. At the end of an active day the Pipi Patch bar is a great place to meet other travellers and locals.

Flying Kiwi Parasailing

Unlike its close cousin paragliding, parasailing is an airborne adventure that absolute beginners can enjoy without having to be strapped to an instructor or be trained.

Parasailing involves being towed behind a fast moving boat while you’re attached to a parachute. When the driver accelerates, you ascend in to the air from a launch platform at the back of the boat. It’s a unique way to experience the Bay of Islands and offers picture perfect views of Paihia, Russell, and the surrounding areas.

We embarked on this unique experience from Paihia Wharf, where we boarded the boat with 4 other people. Once on board we received a briefing and were provided with a life jacket and harness.

When it was my turn to fly, the winch operator connected my harness to the parachute as I sat patiently on the back of the boat. From the launch platform I was gently elevated into the sky up to 1200ft.

Once I was in the air it felt as though everything was in slow motion. I could see the white wash flying out the back of speedboats and people paddling on kayaks, however everything looked motionless as though time had frozen.

As if the view couldn’t get much better, a pod of dolphins and their calves appeared doing flips and summersaults in the water. I had the best seat in the house, so I sat back, relaxed and enjoyed the show that the dolphins put on for me.

Once my 10 minutes was up I felt myself slowly drifting back down to earth. As I was reaching closer and closer to the water I realised what they were up to. “I DON’T WANT TO GET WET!” I yelled at the top of my lungs- luckily they heard me and accelerated so I went back up. Getting dunked in the water is optional however I would let them know before you are in the air.

Ocean Blue Adventures

Ten million years ago a series of violent eruptions created a large land mass off New Zealand’s north east coast. Constant erosion by wind and wave action, combined with sea level changes have created the stunningly dramatic cluster of islands and rock formations that are now known as the Poor Knights.

With dense kelp forests, sand channels, vertical walls, giant sea caves, archways and underwater caverns, it is no wonder that divers come from all over the world to dive in the Poor Knights. Add to this a subtropical current that carries marine life from tropical waters and you have a diver’s heaven.

We boarded the MV Mazurka diving vessel, which was to be our home for the next 24hours. Mazurka is a 14m steel launch with comfortable accommodation for up to 6 guests. The well-equipped boat offers a high level of diving convenience on the covered back deck and has been designed to suit the needs of all divers. We stayed in the back room with a double and single bed in the cabin, which we were pleasantly surprised, was quite comfortable.

After we met the team: Ben, Rachel, Mel, Jamie and the staff: Kevin and Kent, it was time to enter the three-dimensional world of the undersea. Diving the Poor Knights is such a unique experience.

Most of the archways and many of the caves in Poor Knights are open to the surface providing safe access for inexperienced divers like myself. I was able to dive up to 22 metres this time, compared to 8 metres on my first dive.

After a hard day of diving we returned to the boat to enjoy a few beers in a relaxing atmosphere at the surface. Kevin anchored for the night inside a large open cave called rikoriko cave. Sheltered from the wind and swell Kevin cooked a delicious curry with cous cous and vegetables.

To experience all the different facets of the Poor Knights a scuba diving liveaboard charter is the best option. Not only will you get the choice of sites in the morning before others arrive, but you will be able to experience the Poor Knights Islands at night. During the 2 days we were able to fit in at least five dives with plenty of time to relax between dives.

Bold Communications: Learning to Speak Kiwi

Apparently there have been a few complaints that I do not pronounce my words correctly i.e. the kiwi way. So Bold Communications thought it was time they taught me how to speak kiwi language.

We arrived at Bold Communication to meet Kirstie O’Sullivan, BOLD’s lead Trainer and Managing Director and my voice coach for the day. A professional actor, presenter, voice-over artist and trainer in theatre, film, television, radio and corporate theatre for over fifteen years, Kirstie certainly knows her stuff.

She started off by asking me the differences that I have noticed between the Australian and New Zealand accent. Of course I responded with the most recognised difference- the way they pronounce words like “fush and chups” instead of “fish and chips”, “peg” instead of “pig”, and “pin” instead of “pen”.

Then we moved onto the different words. For example us Aussies call the box filled with ice that stores the beer an ‘eski’ where as Kiwis call it a ‘chilly bin’.

Then there is the flip flops that are very popular with all Aussies and Kiwis however for some reason we call them different names. In Aus we know them as ‘thongs’ and here you call them ‘jandles’!?

The whole experience with BOLD was choice as bro. Kirstie is a sweet as voice coach and I believe we achieved the end goal, which was for me to speak Kiwi. Mission achieved.

Sky Tower Walk and Jump

Why not experience and view Auckland from a completely different perspective, 192 metres in the air?

I prepared myself for the Big Jump by doing the Sky Walk first. However I was told after I did the walk that most people consider that to be more daunting then the jump itself. Well that’s just great, they could have told me that before I did the walk.

Suspended 192 metres above the ground, with no handrails and nothing but thin air either side me. I honestly felt as though I was walking on air- just extremely high up in the sky. It was a very moving experience and the views of Auckland are just spectacular. There is nowhere else in Auckland that offers views like this and if there is it is probably behind glass!

My guide Ben was absolutely hilarious. He used words like ‘choice’, ‘bro’, and ‘sweet as’ in every sentence so it was good practice after my BOLD Communication voice coaching. A born and bred kiwi he really made us feel safe and secure during the walk, making us laugh at basically everything he said.

Of course it would be too easy if we just stayed in the middle of the 1.2metre-wide walkway. Ben had us stand with our arms wide apart, toes hanging off the walkway and look down to the tiny specks of people walking along the street. If that wasn’t scary enough our next task involved facing the Sky Tower, planting our feet on the very edge of the pathway and then leaning out backwards. My heart was racing a million miles an hour by this point.

After we accomplished our tasks Ben let us enjoy the rest of the walk around Auckland’s famous Sky Tower and absorb the view.

Next on the agenda was the Sky Jump eeeeek. One of New Zealand’s most thrilling tourist attractions and one of Auckland city’s ‘don’t miss’ experiences, I leapt off Auckland’s famous Sky Tower- 192 metres straight down.

Often described as Base Jumping but with a wire rather than a parachute, this was such a unique experience. I felt just like spider man flying between buildings at approximately 85 km an hour. Before I knew it, it was over in about 11 seconds. My landing was not so graceful. Now that I think about it I do remember Kenny, my guide, telling me to keep my knees soft and bend my legs when I land. However that kind of went out of my head as soon as I let go of the pole and did the big leap.

Kelly Tarltons

Kelly Tarlton opened in 1985 and has grown to become a world-class visitor attraction, offering a uniquely New Zealand Pacific and Southern oceans experience.

Matt Harvey the Front of House Manager took us on a personalised, behind the scenes tour of the Antarctic Encounter, home to New Zealand’s only sub-Antarctic penguins. Offering us a rare opportunity to see the magnificent colony of King and Gentoo penguins up close in their icy domain.

After our one on one with the flightless birds from Antarctica we boarded a unique snowcat ride. From here we were able to watch their playful antics on the snow and their elegant flight underwater. They really are just like children on red cordial.

Then it was time for the stingray feeding at Stingray Bay. We observed in awe as a stingray, 3 metres wide, climbed her body and sucked up the fish from her hand. I looked at the faces around me and everyone seemed just as amazed as I was. There is also a kiosk in stingray bay that overlooks the ocean. On high tide the water rises about half way up the window so diners can view the wild marine life.

Next we delved deep in the Underwater World where we saw a rich variety of species from New Zealand’s coastal waters. We encountered sharks, eels, stingrays and a vast array of magnificent fish. Walking through Underwater World has been made very easy for visitors as you don’t actually have to walk. Standing on a moving walkway we were transported slowly through the underwater transparent tunnel without actually moving our feet.

Then of course there is the thrilling Animal Adventures for the daring, including cage-free shark dives (as well as cage diving), snorkel and scuba safaris through the oceanarium or you can even take a dip to hand-feed the giant rays.

Whitianga Dive HQ

Dive HQ Whitianga is located right in the heart of Mercury Bay, on the Eastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula. This was my very first scuba dive experience and I couldn’t have thought of a better place for my first time. The natural beauty is breath taking, with a rich backdrop of cliffs and native bush covered valleys that tower above the beautiful beaches. The abundance of marine life and the clarity of the water also make this a popular destination for diving.

They offer a comprehensive range of recreational and professional dive programs. All training is conducted, utilizing local pool and onsite, state of the art lecture rooms, making training convenient for students.

Ryan and Craig, our instructors for the day, went through some safety procedures in the HQ Dive store and provided me with my gear. Then it was time to board the “SCUBA DOO”. A 759 Super cab trailer boat modified and designed specifically for the needs of their divers.

The Cathedral Cove Marine Reserve was only a short boat trip from Whitianga. Ryan ran through a few more instructions and some hand signals before I stepped off the custom built exit platform and into the water.

The water was ice cold, and I could feel my heart beats getting faster and my ears starting to hurt as we went deeper. Following Ryan, I equalized my ears often, until I felt comfortable to explore the underwater sea…

Suddenly brown seaweed, humongous snapper and beautiful coral surrounded me. The transparency of the water was incredible, I could see so far into the ocean. The fish were not bothered by our presence at all, after a few minutes we became apart of their world and they would idly swim past me without a care in the world.

Kuaotunu Store- $5 Kuaotunu Killer

On our drive from Whitianga to Coromandel we stopped off at the Kuaotunu Store. Set in the serene beauty of Kuaotunu, the local store looks out over the river and sea offering magnificent views. The store sells your basic everyday items, however its specialty really is the "Kuaotunu Killer" ice-cream (five scoops of your choice).

I wasn’t game enough to order the Kuaotunu Killer, I couldn’t even finish the $3 ice-cream, which is 2 massive scoops. I can only imagine how big the Kuaotunu Killer is.

There's no better place to sit and enjoy an ice-cream than here.

Driving Creek Railway

Barry Brickell took 32 years to build the 2.6km of tortuous narrow-gauge railway track, after acquiring 22 ha of hilly scrub-covered land in 1973. Some major viaducts, 3 short tunnels, 2 spirals, and 5 reversing points were required to elevate the railway up to the terminus at the Eyefull Tower.

The 1 hour return trip on the innovatively designed train took us through replanted native kauri forest as it climbed up the mountain to the last stop. From here we witnessed colossal views over the island-studded Hauraki Gulf, Auckland and Whaiheke Island.

On the journey up to the Eyefull Tower Paul our train driver presented an informative commentary about the regenerated forest and the history of Driving Creek Railway. Along the way we caught a glimpse of the interesting pottery and artwork by Barry and local and international artists.

The vision behind the Railway and potteries complex is Barry’s passion for combining art, conservation and engineering. Not only has he constructed the narrow gauge railway, he started a major forest restoration project and established New Zealand’s most versatile pottery, sculpture, tile and brick-making workshop.

We disembarked the train at the shop where we found interesting local pottery, glassware, souvenirs and woodcarving.

Pepper Tree Restaurant

Majestically situated in the heart of Coromandel Township, the Pepper Tree Restaurant offers a unique dining experience rich in Coromandel history.

They offer fresh local seafood and modern New Zealand cuisine. I can just imagine enjoying a light lunch in their sun-soaked courtyard and shaded verandas over summer. However on the night we were there the weather was cold and rainy so I enjoyed a hearty steak with vegetables and mashed potatoes next a cosy open fire.

Far from the hustle and bustle of daily life lies The Waterworks, five acres of fun filled gardens set in the beautiful Coromandel bush. A tourist attraction (formerly known as Waiau Waterworks) in the Coromandel, Waterworks is like nothing I have ever seen before. Showcasing the best of quirky Kiwi ingenuity, Geoff, the owner and operator assures me there is nothing like Waterworks in New Zealand nor the rest of the world!

There is something like 1,260,000,000,000,000,000,000 litres of water on earth and Geoff and his crew have taken their portion of it and turned it into a liquid fun park! Water is used to keep accurate time on the wooden water clock, arming water cannons to blast away on, pumping H20 through the water-bikes, and for splashing about in the natural swimming hole. However the best part for me was the big flying fox- it was awesome.

The Waterworks offers a full catering service in their large café offering outdoor and indoor seating. Alternatively, you can bring your own food and refreshments, relax in the bush setting picnic sites and use their outdoor BBQ’s.

Getting to The Waterworks was an experience itself. Located along the 309 Road we were visited by some wild boar and their piglets. So we decided to pull over and feed them some of our muesli. Before we knew it one boar and two piglets turned into about 40 wild pigs all barging each other over trying to get to our muesli in the Wicked Van.

The Oster Company

South of Coromandel township, this outlet serves freshly harvested and shucked oysters. The harbour side shop also sells fresh local mussels, their own marinated mussels, prawns, local scallops, kina and smoked seafood, sauces, souvenirs and a delicious Mussel Chowder.

Anne has been growing oysters for over 20 years in the pristine waters of the Coromandel and her aim is to provide premium Coromandel Oysters at an affordable price. The store is open 7 days a week from 9am to 5pm.

Rapoura

Rapaura is the realization of the vision and creativity of two very dedicated people. When Fritz and Josephine Loennig purchased 64 acres of scrub and grazing land in the early 1960’s, little did they know that Rapaura would become an international attraction.

Today, almost 40 years later, the present owner Sally Sank and her family are dedicated to the nurturing and on going creation of Rapaura.

Water Gardens

Rapaura is made up of native bush and ferns, water gardens, birds (Tuis, Fantails, Silver Eyes and Wood Pigeons), meandering walks over bridges and streams, and a bush walk to a beautiful cascading waterfall.

There are seasonal displays of native and exotic flowers interspersed with garden art. During the hours of 9 to 5 the Gardens are open to the public but when the gate closes, the estate becomes a private playground for guests staying in Rapoura’s Boutique Accommodation.

Koru at Rapoura

After our walk out to the spectacular waterfall we returned to the café to find a delicious curry soup waiting for us. Served in a china teacup this soup was just divine. My only disappointment was that it wasn’t bigger! However you can order it as a main, which I would recommend.

For a main I had the flounder, which was served with a side salad and freshly baked bread. If I thought things couldn’t get much better Sacha, the chef, gave us cheesecake and chocolate cake to take with us. I had the cheesecake and it was honestly to die for.

Rapoura Boutique Accommodation

They offer accommodation in either the Lodge or a Country Cottage, both are situated in the grounds of Rapaura.

The Lodge offers two bedrooms with queen-sized beds (one with an ensuite), a large open plan living and dining area, fully equipped kitchen, breakfast room, pantry and numerous decks. There is also a laundry room, adjacent garage and BBQ facilities.

The Garden Cottage comprises a bedroom with a queen-sized bed, bathroom, open plan fully-equipped kitchen and dining area, a lounge and an outside patio. Harley Davidson Tours

Riding a Harley Davidson around the Coromandel is by far the coolest way of seeing the region. When a Harley roars through a town, everyone stops and stares. Well at least that is what happened when Baz Howie drove into the Breakers Motel, to pick me up for my Harley Tour.

From Whangamata to Hot Water Beach, people stopped to stare and wave as we cruised on by. With the wind in my hair, the loud throbbing of the engine and good old AC/DC’s ‘Highway to Hell’ blaring out of the speakers I felt like Bonnie out of Bonnie and Clyde.

Its from their Waihi base that Howie and wife Ali run Harley-Davidson tours of New Zealand, with the only pre-requisite being the ability to climb on the back of a big bike. Along with offering chauffeured passenger tours, they also hire Harleys to licensed riders and run guided tours of the country.

The winding road from Whangamata to Hot Water Beach follows the picture perfect shoreline and offers breathtaking views along the way. I sank into the backseat of the Electraglide Ultra Classic, perched above Baz in what felt like a comfortable armchair. Before I knew it I was at Hot Water Beach watching Howie coast away and wishing I was still on the back of the Harley.

Hot Water Beach

Hot Water Beach is a truly unique Kiwi experience that everyone travelling to the North Island of New Zealand should experience!

An underground river of hot water flows from the interior of the earth to the surface in the Pacific Ocean at Hot Water Beach – a long beautiful white beach located between Tairua and Whitianga. The stunning beach overlooks the Pacific Ocean and offshore Castle Rock, with Pohutukawa lined cliffs at either end of the beach.

Two hours either side of low tide visitors flock to the usually deserted Hot Water Beach to find hot water bubbling through the golden sand. Families, kids and couples can been seen digging their own spa pool in the sand to lie back in and relax while the steam from their hot pool envelops them. With the ebb and flow of the tide each individually created hot pool is washed away clearing the way for the next influx of visitors.

Because we spent more time than expected on the Harley (I couldn’t get enough of it) the tide was already in when we arrived. So that is something I will be returning to experience for myself. It was pretty cool though to see all the people relaxing in the man made holes.

Moko Artspace Hot Water Beach

Moko is an art space at Hot Water Beach, which houses contemporary New Zealand and pacific Art including jewellery, designware, wall art and sculpture.

Literally across the road from Hot Water Beach, we walked over to Moko Artspace after our visit to the famous hot pools. I loved some of the jewellery pieces they had on sale. It was very unique and different and reasonably priced.

Hot Waves Café

This café has an easy-going ambience with an arty interior and lovely garden in which we listened to cool music, while we ate our fabulous food.

Ordering our healthy and very tasty meals we admired the art on the walls, which we soon realised was art pieces from Moko Artspace. Our meals were served with a huge smile and friendly service.

With regular gigs playing at the café, a selection of toys to keep toddlers amused, a few leather sofas for coffee and a chat with friends, this café has something for everyone.

Note: Hot Waves Café is not to be confused with the rather basic snacks at the Hot Water Beach café, which is best for hiring spades and buying ice-creams and beverages.

Sea Kayaking Adventures

As The Coromandel is abundant with forest and marine life, paddling yourself around the Marine Reserve is one of the best ways to get up close and personal with all the reserve has to offer. Based in Hahei, Sea Kayaking Tours offer modern sea kayaks that allowed us to explore caves, coves and blowholes that others simply can’t get to.

The day we went kayaking, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky, there was no wind and I was actually building up a sweat in shorts and a shirt. Find that quite hard to believe? Well apparently that is usually the case in the Coromandel.

Rated by NZ’s leading tour companies as one of the best sea kayaking trips in the country, the “Cathedral Cove Classic” has got it all. We paddled through amazing sea caves and explored volcanic islands in the Marine Reserve.

Once we reached our destination, Cathedral Cove we set up shop on the beach and our guide, Mark turned into a barista making us cappuccinos, lattes, and hot chocolates. I half expected the sachet coffee but when I Mark whip out his Bunsen burner to heat and froth the milk I was very impressed. When my hot chocolate was served with marshmallows on the side, well…

There’s nothing like a bottle of L&P, a little Kiwi classic with loads of fresh taste. Lemon and Paeroa is a legend and as Kiwi as it gets.

This favourite fruity drop came to life in the sunny Paeroa. With a little bit of lemon and a sprinkling of the magic ingredient, the little kiwi beauty was born.

The Cave Weta.

We visited old historic gold caves, home to sparkling glow worms and cave wetas. Peter thought it would be funny to tickle the back of my neck with a twig as we were looking at the all the cave wetas crawling on the roof. Lets just say that it took me .5 of a second to get out of that cave- screaming as I did so.

Breakers Motel

A unique getaway on the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand, Breakers Motel is privately tucked in by a reserve bordering on the estuary. An attractive two-story building that resembles a ‘wave’, Breakers consists of four two-bedroom suites, eight one-bedroom units and eight studio units.

Our one-bedroom unit consisted of a queensize bed in the lounge room and two singles in the separate bedroom. Whether its your first time in the ocean or you’ve been surfing for years, qualified surfer coach and sponsored surfer Ricky Parker will get you mastering the surf in no time. One of only 15 surf coaches in the country with a level 1 certification, Ricky set up the Surf School with his partner Jazelle to introduce others to the sport.

Jaz, Ricky and their little groms (young surfers) will teach you everything there is to know about surfing. His lessons are ideal for people who have not surfed or are still just finding their feet. The G boards they use for lessons are great for learners because they are really stable and easy to ride.

However, for those who have surfed before Ricky can also teach you some awesome moves. I attempted to master the ‘Hang 10’ move but wasn’t so successful.

As I paddled out with Ricky close behind, Jaz and their little girl were on the beach cheering me on. The first set rolls in and Ricky pushes me on to my first wave. “Paddle Kel paddle” I hear him yelling. Using my hands to push myself up, I put one for in front of the other and VOILA- its as easy as that.

Ricky and Jas also run an up market surf camp, which is designed to take your surfing to the next level, and beyond. I say up-market camp because it is more like a luxury holiday retreat.

Oceana’s Restaurant

Oceaana’s restaurant is a fine dining restaurant specialising in seafood and New Zealand cuisine. Located in the town centre, however off the busy main street, this restaurant is walking distance from many of the local accommodation providers in Whangamata.

This is considered by the locals to be the best restaurant in Whangamata and it probably is. To start I had the special of the night, Seafood Chowder, which was delicious. For a main I had the salt and pepper squid and prawns, which was also quite tasty.

Remote New Zealand Journeys

As the dusk falls over the Coromandel national parks, a magical glow within the forest walls begins to brighten. With Remote New Zealand Journeys you can get up close and personal with these fascinating creatures glowing within the forest.

As we hiked through stunning semi tropical rain forests, we were once again amazed by the sheer beauty of the glow worms, as they shone in their natural habitat.

However they are not the only things shining in this magnificent forest. As we walked along the rugged pathways our torch light caught the reflection of the New Zealand Silver Ferns creating a spectacular vision.

WELL… Amanda screamed, I was in hysterics laughing and the 2 boys were just about in tears. Maybe not such a good idea after all.

Wairere Falls Farm Cottage offers fully self-contained accommodation on a working dairy farm. The Cottage offers exquisite views of the Wairere Falls in the dramatic Kaimai Ranges. Hobiton movie set tours

For all you Lord of the Rings fans out their, this is the tour for you. On the picturesque private farmland near Matamata in the North Island, you can visit the remnants of the original Hobbiton Movie Set from The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy.

In a fascinating two-hour guided tour you will be able to stand under the party tree, crawl into Bilbo and Frodo’s Hobbit hole “Bag End”, and walk the road that the Hobbits once walked.

We were lucky enough to have Ian Brodie, the author of The Lord of the Rings Location Guide Book as our guide. Nikau Cave

Nikau Cave is less than 90 minutes drive southwest of Auckland, New Zealand, and has thousands of glowworms and amazing formations, but no crowds. The cave tours are personal, unhurried and best of all unspoiled by paths, handrails and electric lights. It is the real deal at Nikau Caves!

Before our caving adventure we enjoyed a delicious tomato soup with homemade bread at the Nikau Cave Café. The backdrop of sheep and cows grazing on a rugged hill sets the scene and provides the ideal place to start and finish the tour.

Our guide Phil gave us each a torch and safety helmet- just for precautions and then we set off into the dark and gloomy world of the caves. As we walked through streams and over rocks my feet were instantly wet but this makes it all the more interesting and fun.

Crawling on my elbows and knees in icy cold water through a long narrow cave about a half a metre high. Phil wasn’t lying when he said we might get a little bit wet- the torch might be waterproof but my clothes definitely were not.

However it was all worth it as I reached the other side and my eyes adjusted to the galaxy of glowworms twinkling from the roof high above. That was just the beginning!

As we walked through the exquisite cave our torches discovered glistening white pillars, delicate shawls and long, fragile clusters of straws made from limestone. These formations are otherwise known as stalagmites and stalactites, and are very impressive to say the least.

We finally found the light of the biggest glowworm of all, the sun, and made our way up some steps that led us into the beautiful native rainforest. For the five-minute walk back to the café I was in awe as Phil explained that we were walking on top of what we had just crawled our way through.

Once we were back at the Café/accommodation we had nice warm showers and changed into some dry clothes. After a delicious dinner of lamb chops, salad and potatoes I had one of the best cakes I have ever tasted- cinnamon and pear mmmmmm. Instead of TV and Internet we had a fun filled evening of wine and Pictionary. As our laughter echoed into the high beams of the ceiling in the café, I realized I hadn’t laughed like that in a long time!

Guests can choose to stay in the cosy cabin located privately at the outer edge of their extensive gardens or stay in one of the rooms in the Café Lodge. We were originally planning to stay in the cabin, which has a private kitchenette and bathroom however our gutless van couldn’t make it up the steep incline. We feel our new nickname for the van is quite fitting: “Willyeva”. Translation “will-he-ever” make it up this hill? We didn’t mind though because we had fun playing board games and socializing with the other guests.

Wiseway Canoe Adventures

The Waikato River runs through Hamilton city and was once used as a main food source and highway for the people. Today it is still a life source to the people of Waikato supplying water to its major towns and cities. It might not be used as a main highway these days but the history still remains.

Wiseway Canoe Adventures is one of the only companies, which allows you to fully experience the history of the Waikato River. The canoe was of great importance to the Maori people in its time so it was amazing to view Hamilton from the canoe.

As we paddled down the mighty river at our own pace, without a care in the world (apart from the dark rain clouds forming above our heads) we drifted back to a time gone by. Taking in the scenery of the city and the beautiful houses that now reside on the banks of the river.

Titoki Boutique Accommodation

Titoki is one of Hamilton’s newest luxury Boutique style accommodation and is the perfect base from which to explore all that Hamilton and the mighty Waikato has to offer. John and Judy opened Titoki Boutique Accommodation in March 2009. Designed with the discerning guests in mind, Titoki combines the character of original design with a contemporary New Zealand flair.

After a long day of canoeing down the Waikato River, it was nice to sit back, relax and put our feet up whilst enjoying a glass of Vino with John and Judy. The outdoor/indoor entertaining area is ideal for idling or in my case working on my Blog.

The luxury guest wing consists of two well-appointed suites. Both queen size bedrooms feature their own ensuite with under floor heating, luxury bathrobes, all your toiletries and very soft bath towels. The modern suites are sleek, stylish and elegant whilst still keeping a homely feel to them.

However, Judy and John are so much fun we spent most of our time in the main lounge listening to stories of their travel adventures.

Waikato Museum

Established in 1987, Waikato Museum is one of Hamilton’s largest and more unusual buildings. Situated on the banks of the Waikato River the building has five levels and 12 galleries for tourists to explore. With multiple galleries and exhibitions the Museum presents an inspired programme that seeks to celebrate the stories of New Zealand’s art, culture, history and innovation.

The Waikato Museum provides a fun and unique experience of the arts and culture of the region. One of the highlights for me was the Tickle My Senses and the Never a Dull Moment exhibitions. We also had a lot of fun on the Wii Mario cart games.

However the most moving thing for me was the special Patere Chant performed by Kim, Tama, April and Leafa. As they performed this chant especially for me, Tama presented me with a Maori Hook necklace. This symbolises that I will be ‘hooked’ to the Waikato Museum forever. This was such an amazing experience and I am extremely grateful to the staff at the Museum.

The Waikato Museum presents a changing programme of exhibitions, featuring items from its own large collection as well as the national and international touring exhibitions. The best thing about Quest is that you pay for a hotel room but in actual fact you get an apartment. This means extra room to relax, work and live. On arrival Tony took us for a tour of the property and shared his extensive knowledge on the services and facilities that Quest offers. One of the things that I noticed sets them apart is that they really do go out of their way to ensure that ‘home way from home’ experience. Pantry Shopping is a unique service, which allows Quest guests to place a grocery shopping order prior to arrival so that Quest can do the shopping on each guest’s behalf. The best apart about this service is that there is no extra costs- guests receive their receipt and pay exactly what they would have in the supermarket.

We stayed in a One Bedroom apartment, which accommodates up to four guests with a queen size bed in a separate master bedroom and a double foldout couch in the separate lounge area. The room was very spacious and comfortable and Tony and Michelle were great hosts providing us with onsite car parking, high speed broadband Internet, breakfast packs and Sky TV.

They also booked us into Andres L’Escargo, an award-winning restaurant for its New Zealand Beef and Lamb since 1996. My meal was mouth watering and the service was very friendly.

WHANGANUI

In the morning we had a meeting with Greg Lincoln and discussed tourism in Whanganui and their plans for the up and coming Rugby World Cup in 2011. Then Trudy, from the city council took us on a personal tour of Whanganui.

As Whanganui has such a vibrant and talented arts community, we visited the Chronicle Glass Studio and watched the artists at work. They have some amazing stuff for sale in their gallery, some of which can be custom made.

We then went for a ride on the Durie Hill Elevator up to the Memorial Tower. Located opposite the Whanganui City Bridge, we entered the Durie Hill pedestrian tunnel that is 205 metres long and leads to the historic Durie Hill Evelvator. Built in 1919 it is the only earthbound elevator in New Zealand and one of the only two in the world.

At the top of the mountain I climbed the 176 steps leading to the top of the Memorial Tower, which offers excellent views of the city, Mounts Taranaki and Ruapehu and the Tasman Sea.

The Whanganui Airport is a monument in itself and has won a few design awards. So Trudy took us for a drive out to the airport where we enjoyed a hot drink and watched a plane land. There are regular flights from Auckland and Wellington into Whanganui, making it an easily accessible city.

Anndion Lodge

Located on the banks of the Whanganui River with stunning river views, Anne and Dion provide genuine kiwi hospitality and made us feel right at home. They were great hosts and made us feel very much at home.

Anndion Lodge is the perfect place to stay whilst exploring the greater Whanganui district and the Whanganui River Valley. During winter the lodge is in prime position to enjoy a day of skiing on the Whakapapa or Turoa ski fields on Mt Ruapehu. After a day of skiing, relax in the Anndion sauna and spa to rejuvenate those over worked muscles or if your really keen take a deep in their salt-water swimming pool.

The Lodge offers luxurious yet affordable accommodation for business or pleasure. The Lodge has a unique range of accommodation from a 5 star backpackers dorm room, to a 2-bedroom luxury motel suite with a private courtyard, or a private room with guest share facilities. The kitchen, lounge room and dining room shared by guests are very modern, stylish and clean.

If this doesn’t suit you can base yourself at the riverside Anndion Lodge in one of their luxury self contained Apartments. With a fully self-contained kitchen, an ensuite bathroom and luxurious Queen sized bed. We stayed in one of their private rooms with shared guest facilities. The bed was extremely comfortable with nice fluffy pillows. We both had a very good nights sleep.

Relaxation areas are plentiful both inside and out, with warm and sunny areas to sit and relax outside or lounge by the cosy gas log fire inside. The waterfall and fountain by the pool provides peace, harmony and a resort like setting.

It is no surprise that in 2009 Anndion Lodge was the winner of the Whanganui INC- Leisure and Tourism Award. Anne and Dion offer amazing hospitality. The best thing about the Lodge for me is that they offer free high-speed wireless Internet- something that you do not come across very often.

Ohakune Court Motel
With 18 self-contained units set in the courtyard, featuring mountain views Ohakune Court Motel is a great place to be based not only for the ski season but also in summer.

Our unit featured a kitchen with basic facilities (microwave and fridge), a TV with a video player (free video and games library at reception) and wireless broadband internet access. With a queen sized bed and a single the room was very spacious and clean.

The best thing about the motel is that it is off the main street in town but still close enough to enjoy all the amenities. Donald the owner of Ohakune Court Motel was very helpful in recommending walks and activities to do in town. Such a shame we didn’t have longer!

Ohakune is ideally situated between Tongariro and Whanganui River National Parks and lies at the foot of Mt Ruapehu- well known for winter skiing. However once the snow melts away and summer sets in, the National Parks become a paradise for hikers, mountain bikers and fisherman.

Room rates range from $85 for studio units to $220 for 2 bedroom units.

Bridge to Nowhere Jet Boat Tour, Whanganui

Bridge to Nowhere are the only company that can provide the total ‘adventure on Whanganui River’ providing you with accommodation, jet/canoe trips, guided tours, and tramping. With over 40 years of living, working and playing in the park Joe, Amanda, and their son Ben have gained extensive knowledge of the river, tracks and their secrets.

Jet boat tours depart from Pipiriki, a tiny historic village nestled on the banks of the Whanganui River. Travelling up stream into the middle reaches of the Whanganui you feel as though you have travelled back in time to the Jurassic Park era. Pristine native bush cloaks the banks, we witnessed deep gorges covered with ferns, caves, rapids, and other unique and amazing scenery.

Our guide, Ben, shared stories of the river and showed us some of the secrets of this historic and cultural icon. Along the way we stopped at the magnificent Mangaio gorge and the Manganui-O-Te-Au River, home to the endangered Blue Duck. We were even lucky enough to see the Blue Duck in its natural habitat!

We continued on deeper into the magical wilderness of the Whanganui River and arrived at our destination- the Mangapurua Landing. By foot we ventured deep into the native bush and followed a track that was once walked by the Maori. With the Tuis and Bellbirds chirping, wild goats roaming and the smell of rainforest filling the air, I felt as if I was in a completely different world. We eventually reached the historic “Bridge to Nowhere” the gateway to the ‘Valley of Abandoned Dreams.’ We enjoyed our own picnic lunch on the bridge, complimented by the tea/coffee and biscuits provided by Ben. While we sat and ate our lunch, Ben provided us with tales of the historic Mangapurua Valley and its pioneering people.

On the return boat ride to Pipiriki the water was acting as a mirror and producing some of the most amazing reflections of the towering cliffs above. At some points the surface of the water was so glassy that the cliffs merged with their reflections perfectly. I actually felt as though we were flying between floating mountains. Imagine an Avatar type atmosphere and that is what it felt like!

To get our hearts pumping just that little bit extra before we departed the jet boat, Ben did a few 360degrees turns. What an amazing day!

Mokai Gravity Canyon

I mastered my very first bungy jump and I couldn’t have thought of a better place to do my first jump then at Mokai Gravity Canyon. The staff were amazing. They were really friendly, understanding, patient and just knew exactly what to say to get the end result- diving head first into a canyon from an 80 metres high bridge.

Mokai Gravity Canyon boasts three world-class adventure activities, including the extreme flying fox, the mighty 80 metre bungy and the bridge swing. I was extremely brave and combined the flying fox with the bungy. However I didn’t get a chance to experience the thrill of a 50-metre freefall on the bridge swing. There is always next time!

To warm up for my big jump I decided to do the flying fox first. Imagine being launched from a ledge 175 metres above the river canyon before flying down a 1 kilometre zip line at speeds of up to 160 kilometres/hour. Sound like fun? Well it is! Lying on my stomach in a comfortable cacoon like harness, you actually feel as though you are flying through the canyon- it is pretty incredible.

Walking back from the flying fox my stomach started to flutter with butterflies as I thought about what was next- the North Island’s highest bridge jump. Standing on a ledge 80metres above the river bed with nothing but a bungy rope strapped to your feet is the most daunting experience I have ever encountered. I honestly didn’t think I could do it. I’ve always said ‘skydiving bring it on but bungy jumping- hell no’, so I was surprised when I actually jumped!

Before I knew it I was back in the café enjoying a chai latte and watching the video of my bungy jump. What an experience!

Opening hours: 9am- 5pm. They even open for night activities on request. Price for one activity $120, $195 for two activities and $270 for those who are brave enough to experience all three!

National Army Museum Waiouru

Centrally located off State Highway 1 and halfway between Auckland and Wellington, The National Army Museum makes for an excellent day out. With an extensive military collection and excellent educational facilities for children the museum offers a look into New Zealand’s military history.

Because it took me a little longer than expected to bungy jump we didn’t have very long to explore the museum, which was a shame. I would recommend at least 2 hours to experience everything the museum has to offer.

Carlene took us on a tour of the museum and she was a great host! Before our tour I was able to take a military car for a drive, which was seriously cool!

As we toured the museum we were engaged in stories of New Zealand soldiers and the history and development of the army. It was very moving to relive the horrific deaths of the heroes that fought the New Zealand’s battles. Dress up in army attire, sit and watch a film about the history of New Zealand or have a bite to eat in the café. There is something for everyone.

The museum café offers a relaxing atmosphere and a range meal and snack options. Freshly baked daily the café has great food and friendly service.

Taihape Motels

Located in the quaint town of Taihape this motel offers a range of units from luxury to 1 &2 bedroom family units. After a long day of accomplishments (the bungy) we were very happy to arrive at the motel.

Con was extremely friendly and welcoming as he showed us to our room. He greeted us with a bottle of wine and packets of chips we settled into Taihape Motels within minutes.

Our room was surrounded by beautiful rose gardens and featured a self-contained kitchen, clean bathroom, a queen-sized bed and two singles. The beds were very comfortable and provided me with the deep sleep that I needed. There is also Sky TV, Wireless broadband and video player with a free extensive video library.

Oakura Beach Holiday Park

Oakura Beach Holiday Park, on Surf Highway 45, is owned and operated by Alan and Janet Rawlinson. Only 15 minutes from New Plymouth, the Holiday Park is a great destination for a beach holiday with heaps of family fun. Located on one of Taranaki’s most popular beaches and central to a string of popular surf spots, there are many things to see and do in the area. While we were staying here, the TSB Women’s Surf Festival was on at Fitzroy beach just down the road from the Holiday Park.

Oakura Beach Holiday Park offers fantastic beachfront holiday accommodation and a great choice of campsites to suit all needs and budgets. We stayed in unit 10, a comfortable cabin featuring spectacular sea views.

This self-contained en-suite unit is a fantastic choice of accommodation, offering the comfort and convenience of having our own bathroom and kitchen. The kitchen is well equipped with a large fridge/freezer, microwave/oven and a cook top. A dining table and chairs gave us a place to enjoy our meal inside and chairs on the deck to enjoy the sun set outside.

The unit comfortably sleeps up to 4 people with the master bedroom there is a double bed, while the other bedroom has two comfortable bunk beds. The bathroom has all basic amenities including a shower with great water pressure. Linen and towels are also provided.

There are also fantastic campsites to choose from absolute beachfront to sheltered spots, while still enjoying fantastic sea views.

TSB BANK WOMEN’S SURF FESTIVAL

Today we took advantage of the nice weather and headed down to the TSB Bank Women’s Surf Festival. Using our media passes we gained access into the media arena and were able to interact with the girls competing.

Hawaiian teenager Carissa Moore has won the inaugural TSB Women's Surf Festival in New Zealand. With a powerful display of surfing the 17-year-old easily accounted for Australia's Sally Fitzgibbon in the final, surfed in near-perfect 2m offshore conditions at Fitzroy Beach in New Plymouth.

With a wide a range of food and beverage options on site and a great performance from a local band, Craig Williamson- Event Director, and Mike Hareb- Event Organiser created a very successful event.

TAUPO

The largest fresh water lake in Australasia and created by the world’s largest volcanic eruption of the past 5000 years, Lake Taupo is fast becoming the next Queenstown. Taupo is a vibrant resort style community with a buzzing café and restaurant scene, varied nightlife and some great pubs and lounge bars.

Action World

As we drove into Action World we instantly noticed all the crazy kids flying metres above the ground with no ropes! Panic started pumping through my body- “UM, where are the harnesses?” I asked the ever cheerful and energetic Bev. “No ropes and harnesses needed, one of the world’s leading Trapeze artist has developed this airbag landing system that ensures a soft and safe landing”. Hmmmm, this should be interesting.

Action World Taupo allows you to experience amazing feats without the risk, thanks to the airbag safety systems. This includes:
• The Circus Trapeze as high as the professionals swing;
• A High Wire Tight Rope at 4 metres;
• The Jungle Swings;
• A Jousting pole that allows you to knock your friends off a padded pole 3 metres above the ground; and
• A slide, which catapults you off a ramp at high speed sending you flying for 5 metres before landing!

Then of course there is the Free Climb Wall and amazing Big Swing, which Bev and her sons can teach you how to do flips off. It is the perfect place to attempt those circus tricks and flying trapeze moves.

First on the agenda was the Big Swing. Bev went before me and disembarked with a backwards summersault then casually said “OK your turn”. This is the ultimate fun swing- I wasn’t as adventurous as I thought on this one and didn’t do the back flip. There is always next time!

I did however do a few forward flips off the launch pad.

After having a play around in the park I headed for the Circus Trapeze- the ultimate and thrilling challenge in Action World. A once in a life time opportunity, I knew I couldn’t back out of this one- I was going to master the catch. The Trapeze is an exact replica of a professional flying trapeze rigging, minus the safety harness and ropes. Damon a staff member at Action World coached me through the technique of swinging before I was able to do the jump. “Lift”- stomach muscles tensed, legs up, “and swing”- squeeze buttocks, swing legs back, deep breath and LEAP. First times a charm, second time not so good, third jump even worse, nailed it on the fourth! Two out of four isn’t so bad!

So we watched Master Chef along with the locals, while enjoying our catch of the day with scrumptious vegetables and salad.

Hukfafalls Jet

After an amazing day on the Bravado 111, we visited the Huka Falls via the Hukafalls Jet- the only jet boat company permitted to take passengers there. Hukafalls Jet offers a unique combination of excitement and natural beauty.

The 30-minute thrilling jet boat ride was with our down-to-earth, funny and professional jet boat driver, Steve. He took us along a beautiful river environment lined with native bush, sheer rock cliff face and natural hot springs. Combining 360 degree spins, with lightning speeds and skimming through narrow passage ways, this is a must-do visitor experience. That’s not even the best part. From the unique vantage point on the jet boat we had the best water level view of the awe inspiring Huka Falls- New Zealand’s most visited natural attraction.

Hukafalls Jet was voted as a finalist in the Arrival Magazine’s People’s Choice Tourism Awards for the North Island 2007, took out two awards at the 2007 Westpac Waikato Business Excellence Awards and was named finalist in the Adventure Category for the New Zealand Tourism Industry Awards 2008- and I can see why.
